Quick Checks Before You Call

NO HOT WATER

CONFIRM POWER, GAS & CONTROLS

For electric tanks, check that the breaker is on and the disconnect has not been bumped. For gas, confirm the gas valve is open and the thermostat is set above “vacation”. If you smell gas, do not relight anything—leave and call us right away.

NOT ENOUGH HOT WATER

CHECK TEMPERATURE & RECOVERY DEMAND

Make sure the thermostat is not set too low and that high-demand appliances (showers, laundry, dishwasher) are not all running at once. If you used to have plenty of hot water and now you do not, the elements, burner, or tank capacity may be failing.

RUSTY OR DISCOLOURED WATER

RUN A SHORT FLUSH & CHECK OTHER TAPS

Run the hot side in a sink or tub for a minute. If only the hot is rusty or dirty and the cold is clear, the tank is likely rusting inside. This is often a sign the heater is near the end of its life.

WATER ON THE FLOOR

CHECK FOR ACTIVE LEAKS & SHUT OFF IF NEEDED

Dry the area and see if new water appears from the tank, valves, or piping. If water is actively leaking or you hear hissing, close the cold-water supply valve above the heater and call us. Do not ignore steady drips or a “sweating” tank.

SMELL OF GAS OR BURNING

STAY SAFE AND DO NOT RELIGHT

If you smell gas, burning plastic, or strong scorch odours near the water heater, do not light any flames or reset the unit. Open doors or windows, leave the area, and call us or your gas utility from a safe spot.

STRANGE NOISES

LISTEN FOR POPPING, BANGING OR WHISTLING

Popping or rumbling often means heavy scale inside the tank. Whistling can mean a failing relief valve. If noises are new, loud, or getting worse, shut off power or gas and book a visit so we can check for damage.

What We Fix Today

Pick the issue below—no hot water, rusty tank, noisy heater, or a full upgrade to high-efficiency—and go straight to the fix.

OLD TANK REPLACEMENT

Swap out leaking, noisy, or end-of-life hot water tanks with new, code-compliant units. We match the size to your home, handle shutoffs and drain-down, and haul away the old heater.

NEW HOT WATER TANK INSTALLATION

Install a new gas or electric hot water tank in a finished or unfinished space. We set the tank, connect water and gas or power, set the temperature, and test for safe operation.

TANKLESS WATER HEATER INSTALLATION

Upgrade to tankless for endless hot water and better efficiency. We size the unit to your home, upgrade gas and venting if needed, and walk you through maintenance and filter care.

VENTING & GAS LINE UPGRADES

Bring older installations up to current code with proper venting, gas line sizing, drip legs, and shutoff valves. We correct unsafe piping, back-drafting, and shared vents.

MIXING VALVES & EXPANSION TANKS

Add or replace mixing valves, expansion tanks, and safety valves so you get steady, safe water temperatures and protect your plumbing from pressure swings.

UTILITY ROOM FLOOD & SAFETY UPGRADES

Add drain pans, leak alarms, shutoff valves, and proper floor drains to reduce damage if a tank fails. We can also relocate heaters off finished floors where practical.

REPAIR VS. REPLACE: WHAT MAKES SENSE FOR YOUR HAMILTON WATER HEATER?

water heater repair

WHEN A REPAIR MAKES SENSE

Most water heater problems can be solved with a targeted repair when the tank itself is still in decent shape. A repair is worth considering if:

  • The heater is under 8–10 years old and sized properly for the home
  • You have no hot water from a failed element, thermostat, igniter, or pilot assembly
  • There are minor drips from valves or fittings, not from the tank body
  • You notice intermittent error codes, short-cycling, or nuisance pilot outages
  • Sediment or scale is present but the tank is not leaking and can be flushed
  • The unit is otherwise safe and you simply need a control, valve, or small part

When replacement is smarter

Replacement is usually the safer and more cost-effective choice when

  • The tank is older than 10–12 years or past the manufacturer’s typical lifespan
  • There is rust, bulging, or seepage from the tank shell or around the bottom seam
  • You are seeing discoloured or rusty hot water throughout the home
  • You want to switch to high-efficiency or tankless for better comfort and lower bills
  • The installation is not to current code for venting, gas piping, or relief valves
  • Repair costs are a large percentage of a new, warrantied heater

What to Expect

FAQ — WATER HEATER & HOT WATER TANK INSTALLATION IN HAMILTON

Most standard tank water heaters last 8–12 years in our area, depending on water quality, maintenance, and usage. If your tank is over 10 years old or showing rust or leaks, it is usually smarter to plan a replacement before it fails.

If the heater is under about 8–10 years old and the tank is not leaking, a repair for elements, thermostats, igniters, or valves can make sense. If the tank is older, rusty, leaking, or constantly running out of hot water, replacement is usually more cost-effective and safer.

Sizing depends on how many people live in the home, how many bathrooms you have, and when you typically use hot water. A typical Hamilton family home uses a 40–50 gallon tank, but homes with larger families, jetted tubs, or high-demand fixtures may need more. We size the heater during the visit so it matches your real usage.

A standard tank stores hot water and keeps it hot all day, which is simple and reliable but uses more standby energy. A tankless heater makes hot water on demand, saving energy and giving longer showers, but it needs proper gas sizing and venting. We can quote both options and explain which fits your home best.

Most straightforward like-for-like tank replacements take about 2–4 hours once we are set up. Tankless installations or jobs needing new venting, gas upgrades, or relocation can take longer. We give you a realistic timeline before we start.

In many cases, gas and venting changes require permits and inspections. We handle the paperwork, schedule inspections where required, and make sure your installation meets local code and manufacturer requirements.

In most cases, yes. If we have the correct size and type of heater available, we can often replace failed tanks the same day, especially for emergency no-hot-water calls. If a special-order unit or major re-piping is needed, we schedule the soonest available slot.

For most homes, a setting around 49–54 °C (120–130 °F) balances comfort, efficiency, and scald protection. Lower temperatures reduce scald risk, especially with children or older adults in the home. We can help you choose a safe setting and adjust mixing valves if needed.
